AAC&U's Liberal Education Magazine Receives Four Merit Awards

Washington, DC—The American Association of Colleges and Universities’ Liberal Education magazine received four merit awards in the print category from The Society of Publication Designers (SPD).

The spring 2023 issue received three merit awards for its

  • cover, which features a story on how the US Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization affects medical education;
  • opening spread of “Dobbs v. Medical Education” illustrated by Sébastien Thibault, and written by Liberal Education’s associate editor Marilyn Cooper;
  • opening spread of “Educational Gag Orders” illustrated by Matt Chase and written by PEN America’s Jeremy Young and Jonathan Friedman.

The fourth merit award recognizes the opening design, with illustrations by Brian Cairns, of the winter 2023 Q&A “Antisemitism? Free Speech? Anti-Zionism?

“These awards are very gratifying, and it’s exciting to be in the company of the other merit award winners,” said Editor-in-Chief Christen Aragoni. “Thank you to the magazine team, particularly our talented design director Todd Albertson, and to everyone for your support and contributions to Liberal Education.”

Published quarterly, Liberal Education focuses on a wide range of topics integral to AAC&U’s work. Magazine articles highlight the voices of educators, faculty, administrators, and students from universities and colleges of all types and sizes, as well as policymakers and others involved in liberal learning and higher education. Stories provide thought leadership and hands-on advice on subjects related to teaching and learning, leadership, faculty innovation, diversity and inclusion, social justice, educating for democracy, and institutional change.
