North Carolina A&T State University and University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) are pleased to announce the 2022 meeting of the North Carolina PKAL Regional Network: Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in STEM: Practical Applications for the Classroom. The virtual meeting will be held on Friday, February 4, 2022.

Event Synopsis

There has been much focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in STEM higher education in the past two years, but most of this effort has been on high-level issues, such as support/ally statements and policy refinement. Less discussion has been focused on practical applications related to how we can weave EDI principles into the classroom. The goal of this meeting is to focus on classroom-level strategies to address EDI issues, including ways to (1) facilitate classroom discussion to ensure all students’ voices are heard, (2) develop course materials that showcase a variety of inclusive perspectives, and (3) strategize approaches that for creating a classroom environment of inclusive excellence.

Dr. Gail Jones, North Carolina State University, will deliver the morning keynote entitled: Sticking with STEM: Who Comes, Who Leaves, Who Stays? Dr. Angela White, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, will facilitate an afternoon plenary workshop: Diversifying the STEM Education Ecosystem. Learn more about the speakers here.

We encourage attendees to have syllabi and other course materials available during the meeting so they can self-reflect on ways to advance their classroom EDI efforts during the breakout sessions and in the expert-led workshop / keynotes. Additional knowledge sharing will occur during morning lightening idea talks and poster sessions where attendees selected from the call for abstracts can present their own work that connects with our event theme.
