STEM Instructional Innovations Necessitated by COVID-19: Evolution of Processes Post Pandemic

Event Overview

Project Kaleidoscope and Coppin State University are pleased to announce the 2022 Capital PKAL Regional Network Conference: “STEM Instructional Innovations Necessitated by COVID-19: Evolution of Processes Post Pandemic."

The conference will continue the traditions and legacy of this important PKAL meeting by highlighting instructional creativity and innovations in STEM best practices, pre-and post-pandemic. These changes may serve as a microcosm as to the state of future education in STEM and how these endeavors will continue to be a conduit to broadening participation in undergraduate STEM education.

Dr. Kelly Mack, Vice President for Undergraduate STEM Education and Executive Director of Project Kaleidoscope at the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) will deliver the opening plenary, That None Shall Perish, which will focus on how critical STEM faculty are to the nation’s broadening participation agenda. Following the plenary, participants will share experiences in concurrent sessions featuring workshops and brief presentations on the following themes:

• The evolution of COVID-19 induced online platforms for instructional and research innovations to the face-to-face platform
  
• The impact of COVID-19 on mental health and classroom engagement
• Establishing and maintaining equity and inclusion in a COVID-19 environment
• COVID-19 factors that now shape potential policy changes
• Lessons learned on effective STEM instructions.

The agenda is organized to engage participants in relevant discussions providing useable information immediately implementable or adaptable to the parameters of individual institutions. Highly encouraged is the participation of STEM professionals who are visionary and aspire to influence STEM research, education, and professional development at a macro level.

New sessions offered at this meeting include the Showcase of Achievements and Successes and the Exploring Common Research Interests Session. For the Showcase, attendees are invited to provide a single PowerPoint showcasing a personal, academic or professional achievement. Instructions for uploading the PPT will be circulated to attendees. For the Research Interests session, attendees will cluster together in groups with related topics of academic/professional interest, and a directory of interests will be published. At time of registration, attendees will provide their topic of interest.

Registration

Registration is online. Registration deadline is March 20.Space is first-come, first-served.

The 2022 Capital PKAL Regional Network Spring Conference is made possible with generous funding by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Registration is required, and capacity is limited. Registration fees are covered by our NSF funding. STEM faculty and administrators from outside of the Capital PKAL region are encouraged to join the Conference.

****Non-tenure track and adjunct faculty are encouraged to register and attend a special session offered during the lunch break. ****

This listening session will serve to inform the future ways in which PKAL can ensure that the professional development needs of our non-tenure track colleagues are met. The session is limited to 26 non-tenure track/adjunct faculty. Registration required.
