Design Assignments That Connect Learning, Teaching, and Assessment
The assignments students complete shape what they learn, how they learn it, and the evidence they produce along the way. When assignments intentionally align learning outcomes, instruction, and assessment, they improve the student experience and create opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning.
In this interactive online workshop, you’ll work through a practical, replicable process for designing and redesigning assignments that align learning outcomes, instruction, and assessment. Using AAC&U's VALUE (Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education) rubrics as design tools, you'll create assignments that make expectations clearer, deepen student learning, and provide meaningful evidence of learning. The strategies you develop are designed to scale and will apply whether you're refining a single course or rethinking assessment across a program or department.
You'll also explore how generative AI can support assignment design by helping you brainstorm ideas, refine assignment language, identify potential gaps, and test assignments against VALUE rubric criteria, while keeping intentional design, disciplinary expertise, and human judgment at the center of every decision.
What You'll Gain
- A Practical Process for Aligning Teaching, Learning, and Assessment: Gain a practical process for creating stronger connections between what you teach, what students learn, and how learning is assessed.
- Skills for Designing Assignments that Support Student Learning and Assessment: Learn how to create assignments that clarify expectations for students and provide opportunities for them to demonstrate their learning.
- Experience Using VALUE Rubrics as Design Tools: Practice how to apply AAC&U's VALUE rubrics to strengthen assignments from the beginning, not only as a tool for evaluating student work.
- Strategies for Integrating AI Thoughtfully into Assignment Design: Explore how generative AI can support brainstorming, revision, and quality assurance while keeping your expertise and judgment at the center.
- Assignment Design Tools you Can Immediately Apply: Leave with revised assignments, planning tools, and resources you can immediately adapt in your own courses or programs.
Who Should Attend?
This workshop is designed for anyone who creates or supports assignment design, including faculty, educational developers, assessment professionals, department chairs, program coordinators, and institutional leaders. Whether you're new to VALUE rubrics or already using them on your campus, you'll leave with a practical process for creating assignments that better align learning outcomes, instruction, and assessment, providing students the best opportunity to demonstrate their learning.
