AAC&U’s Institutes offer opportunities for teams and individuals to develop and exchange best practices in support of advancing campus change initiatives. These team-based institutes offer campus teams a time and place for sustained collaborative work on a project of importance to their campuses, along with a curriculum focused on important trends, research, and best practices delivered by a resident faculty of educational experts and consultants.
A Note Regarding COVID-19: While we currently anticipate that the institutes will proceed as planned, we also recognize the fluidity of developments related to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the measures taken in response to it at the global, national, local, and institutional levels. We want to assure you that the health and safety of institute participants, faculty, and staff will remain our highest priority. As we continue to monitor the situation, we will provide timely updates regarding deadlines or contingency plans. Should it become necessary to cancel an institute, all deposits and registration costs will be fully refunded.
Institute on ePortfolios
January 21-22, 2022 (Kickoff event - Virtual)
AAC&U, in collaboration with AAEEBL and NASPA, has launched the Institute on ePortfolios. This institute provides a new model featuring a year-long engagement opportunity for campus and/or state system teams seeking to actualize an ambitious strategy to broaden student engagement with ePortfolios. Campuses and/or systems considering ePortfolios for general education purposes or to capture the full range of the undergraduate student experience would be among those ideally suited for this institute.
Institute on General Education and Assessment
June 1-4, 2022
The AAC&U Institute on General Education and Assessment (IGEA) provides opportunities for campus teams to improve the design and assessment of their general education programs. Teams will explore equity-minded approaches to integrating general education and the major, ways to connect student learning with critical social issues, and how to ensure alignment between program goals and the essential learning outcomes identified through AAC&U’s LEAP (Liberal Education and America’s Promise) initiative.
Institute on Teaching to Increase Diversity and Equity in STEM (TIDES)
June 19-23, 2022
The AAC&U Institute on Teaching to Increase Diversity and Equity in STEM (TIDES), derived from our evidence-based model of professional development, offers a unique opportunity for STEM faculty to build capacity and self-efficacy in exploring the root sources, codes, and causes of minority group underrepresentation in STEM. This Institute overcomes the limitations of the one-size-fits-all approach to undergraduate STEM teaching, promotes accountability to self and others as a unifying theme, and creates a networked improvement community that can be leveraged for widespread change.
Institute on High-Impact Practices and Student Success
June 13-18, 2022
The AAC&U Institute on High-Impact Practices and Student Success draws on evidence-based research that demonstrates a positive relationship between student participation in high-impact practices (HIPs) and improved student outcomes. Campus teams will articulate guided learning pathways that serve as catalysts to deepen connections between the assets students bring to college and their educational experiences.
Institute on Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Campus Centers
June 20-25, 2022
The AAC&U Institute on Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Campus Centers helps campus teams identify evidence-based strategies that support their vision of what their communities will look, feel, and be like when the belief in the hierarchy of human value no longer exists. Teams will work to develop an action plan that includes strategic goals that align with their vision and the existing TRHT framework, steps to achieve those goals, and plans for evaluation, communications, engagement, and sustainability.
PKAL STEM Leadership Institute
The PKAL STEM Leadership Institute is designed for both early- and mid-career STEM faculty engaged in leading projects aimed at transforming undergraduate STEM education in their classrooms, departments, and institutions. The PKAL STEM Leadership Institute empowers individuals in fully understanding and implementing the theory and practice of navigating the politics of change, addressing inter- and intra-personal conflicts, and re-structuring the institutional systems that limit our capacity for global competitiveness in science and technology.
Institute on Integrative Learning and Signature Work
July 18-22, 2022
Institute on Open Educational Resources
Year-Long Institute (Kick-Off Event on July 26–27, 2021)
The AAC&U Institute on Open Educational Resources (OER) is designed for campuses aspiring to launch or expand initiatives to develop or leverage free and affordable materials in teaching and learning contexts. Drawing on research that suggests OER address a number of higher education concerns, including affordability, completion, attainment gaps, and learning, campus teams will develop and enact campus transformation action plans to accelerate OER engagement and adoption within their unique contexts.
