Gary Carini

Gary Carini is a Professor of Strategic Management at Baylor University’s Hankamer School of Business. His academic career has focused on the intersection of strategy, leadership, organizational transformation, and emerging technologies. Most recently, he served as Vice Provost for Artificial Intelligence & Institutional Research, where he helped advance university-wide initiatives related to artificial intelligence, data-informed decision-making, and institutional strategy. Prior to that role, he served as Associate Dean for Graduate Business Programs at the Hankamer School of Business.

Dr. Carini earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Davis, his master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California, and his Ph.D. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, with emphases in international strategic management and organizational behavior.

His research interests include competitive dynamics, effective strategy implementation, post-acquisition integration, and the connection between organizational vision and leadership. More recently, his work has explored how leaders communicate and convey mood and tone in response to volatile and unpredictable market environments. A major area of current interest is the strategic impact of artificial intelligence on organizations, with particular focus on the emerging field of Agentic Finance and how autonomous AI agents may transform financial decision-making, strategy formulation, and organizational performance. His research has been published in leading academic and practitioner outlets, including the Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Journal of Business Research, Long Range Planning, Thunderbird International Business Review, and Harvard Business Review.

Dr. Carini teaches global strategic management in Baylor’s Dallas Executive MBA program and has received numerous teaching awards throughout his career. He is passionate about helping executives and organizations translate strategy into action through thoughtful leadership, disciplined execution, and meaningful organizational change.

For more than 25 years, he has served as a strategy and leadership consultant, executive coach, and facilitator, working with organizations and leaders across a variety of industries. He currently serves on the board of a technology start-up and has been an active volunteer with the Prison Entrepreneurship Program based in Houston, Texas.

In his spare time, you will find him roasting coffee from around the world and cycling (but not at the same time!).
