AAC&U Launches New Institute on AI, Pedagogy, and the Curriculum
Washington, DC—The American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) announced today the 124 higher education institutions selected to participate in its inaugural Institute on AI, Pedagogy, and the Curriculum. This new, fully online institute is designed to help departments, programs, colleges, and universities respond effectively to the challenges and opportunities artificial intelligence (AI) presents for courses and curricula. The institute launches with a kickoff event today and tomorrow, and it will conclude with a closing capstone event on April 10–11, 2025. Between those events, the institute will engage participating teams via virtual events, mentorship, and interactions as they develop and implement AI action plans for their classrooms, curricula, and campuses.
“The rapid emergence of generative AI has resulted in profound opportunities and challenges for nearly all disciplines in higher education,” said C. Edward Watson, Vice President for Digital Innovation at AAC&U. “AI competencies and literacies are quickly emerging as necessary workforce skills. This demands that associated learning outcomes become a part of our curriculum; however, evoking AI into the classroom can create challenges regarding academic integrity and student learning. This institute is designed to help campuses navigate these complexities, engage in curricular and pedagogical reform, and address the array of related concerns associated with AI in higher education, including questions about policies, ethics, and the future of higher learning. I’m excited that AAC&U is collaborating with so many institutions to address our latest teaching and learning grand challenge.”
The institute will offer monthly meetings and webinars throughout the academic year to allow time for teams to interact with other campuses, address timely topics of interest, and provide updates on the status of AI. Each campus team will be assigned a mentor from the institute’s faculty. In addition to providing their perspectives, each faculty mentor can also connect the team with expertise from other institute faculty members as needed. Asynchronous interactions across campus teams and with the institute’s faculty will be encouraged and facilitated through AAC&U’s online institute platform.
