Learn More About Calibration Training

  • This training is designed for a variety of individuals, including:

    • faculty/instructors seeking to learn more about assessment, rubrics, and the VALUE rubrics specifically;
    • program coordinators and administrators aiming to align assessment tools with institutional goals and what’s actually happening in the classroom;
    • assessment professionals interested in authentic assessment and rubric-based assessment best practices; and
    • higher education administrators looking for scalable solutions to assess student learning effectively.

    Whether you’re new to the VALUE rubrics or looking to optimize their use on your campus or in your classroom, calibration training will give you in-depth information about the VALUE approach to assessment, how to score with the VALUE rubrics, and the specific rubric(s) of choice.

  • Calibration training is made up of four lessons:

    • Lessons 1-2 include foundational content on the VALUE approach to authentic assessment,
    • Lesson 3 focuses on the specifics of your selected rubric, and
    • Lesson 4 offers key takeaways and next steps for participants who want to become "certified" VALUE scorers.

    During the training, participants will practice scoring using actual student work samples drawn from diverse institutional types, disciplines, and contexts, and then receive immediate feedback to refine scoring accuracy and consistency.

  • This self-paced, virtual training course takes most participants 4-6 hours to complete and is facilitated by AAC&U's VALUE Team.

    We fully embrace the "train the trainer" model, thus encouraging trainees return to their home campuses with key knowledge and skills to share, thus supporting institutional capacity-building while also joining a growing community of trained VALUE scorers nationwide.

  • Trainees can optionally elect to become a "certified" scorer.

    To become formally certified as a VALUE rubric scorer, trainees must successfully complete the course in full and score four additional artifacts on our official scoring platform. The VALUE Team will then assess the scorer's level of calibration, and those meeting our benchmark level of calibration will be invited to become a certified expert scorer.

    Certification provides the scorer with an opportunity to score for compensation within the VALUE Scoring Collaborative and a certificate noting the achievement.

    Trainees will learn more about this opportunity in Lesson 4.
