VE/COIL Clinic: Assessing and Enhancing Student-Centered Learning Outcomes in VE/COIL

Overview

Virtual exchange/collaborative online international learning (VE/COIL) creates opportunities for students to develop knowledge, skills, and capacities through collaboration across different cultural and geographic contexts. Understanding that learning requires intentional alignment between what students are expected to learn, the evidence that can make their learning visible, and how that evidence will be interpreted and used.

This three-week online AAC&U VE/COIL Clinic helps participants develop practical, student-centered approaches to assessing learning within courses, programs, and faculty development or institutional initiatives. Through applied tools, examples, guided reflection, and peer exchange, participants identify meaningful sources of evidence, consider contextual and equity dimensions of assessment, and develop strategies for using findings to strengthen future VE/COIL learning experiences.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will

• align intended VE/COIL learning outcomes with meaningful and feasible sources of evidence of student learning;
• select and interpret evidence using student-centered approaches that account for context, equity, and different ways students may demonstrate learning; and
• develop a practical strategy for using evidence to strengthen VE/COIL design, implementation, and continuous improvement.

This clinic is designed for faculty, instructional designers, assessment and teaching and learning professionals, international education staff, program leaders, and others seeking to better understand and strengthen learning through VE/COIL.

It is relevant both for participants assessing student learning within an individual course or collaboration and for those developing assessment approaches across programs, faculty development initiatives, or broader institutional VE/COIL efforts.
