2019 Puerto Rico PKAL Regional Network Meeting and PR-LSAMP 18th Annual Best Practice Conference

Fostering Inclusive Excellence = Higher Retention Rates

February 16, 2019
University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras
Facundo Bueso Building, Third Floor, Room 341
Av. Dr. José N. Gándara
San Juan, PR 00931

Excellence in STEM requires diverse perspectives, which cannot be achieved without inclusive environments to recruit, retain, and train future scientists and engineers. Most Hispanic Serving Institutions lack formal spaces to discuss inclusion and equity strategies. Moreover, there is a prevalent lack of knowledge about cultural and intersectional differences among Hispanic subgroups, thus perpetuating the general misconception that Latino students are “all the same." At the same time, there is a need to study and establish best practices to prevent the institutionalization of “deficit models” and to debunk cultural stereotypes related to Latino achievement and interest in STEM. The 2019 PKAL Regional Network Meeting will address new approaches currently established at Hispanic Serving Institutions to promote inclusion. Culturally relevant approaches and metrics about student perceptions and lived experience that increase Latino participation in STEM will be emphasized and shared to start a community of practitioners.

Please join us for a productive conference to discuss easily implemented strategies that will promote equity at your institution.

Following the regional meeting, participants are invited to participate in the AAC&U Knowledge Exchange ClinicThis initiative, generously funded by the National Science Foundation, has as its goal to provide disciplinary STEM faculty with access to education research and evaluation expertise that is not only culturally responsive, but also necessary for increasing grant proposal competitiveness, improving intervention implementation strategies, and evaluating the outcomes thereof. Our Clinic is designed to develop shared ways of describing and measuring successful research-informed strategies that can accelerate systemic and sustainable changes for broadening participation in STEM. The Clinic will take place from 1:30 - 5:15 PM at the University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras. There is no additional charge to participate in the Clinic. However, separate registration is required.
