Project Kaleidoscope and Bowie State University are pleased to announce the 2019 meeting of the Capital PKAL Regional Network: “A Call to Action for Diversity and Inclusion in STEM”. The meeting will be held March 15, 2019 at Bowie State University in Bowie, Maryland.

Keynote Speaker

Martirano.jpgDr. Michael J. Martirano will deliver the keynote, "Learning and Leading with Equity."  Dr. Martirano  was named superintendent for the Howard County Public School System in July 2018 after serving as interim superintendent since May 2017. He considers himself a teacher first and foremost, and believes children must be at the center of all decision-making. Guided by the principle “to teach a child well, you must know a child well,” he is committed to ensuring equity and giving every child an opportunity to succeed.

Dr. Martirano is leading Howard County public schools with his Strategic Call to Action, which guides all system actions and decisions toward ensuring the academic success and social-emotional well-being for each student in an inclusive and nurturing environment. He has been an educator for more than 35 years, including as a science teacher, principal, superintendent of St. Mary’s County Public Schools, West Virginia state superintendent of schools and visiting professor at Johns Hopkins University.

Conference Themes
Meeting sessions, workshops, and poster presentations will explore new ideas  on the following themes:

  1. Inclusion and Diversity Strategies and Interventions for Successful Learning
  2. Promoting Critical Thinking Skills through the use of Technology Tools and/or Laboratory Experiences to Broaden Access to STEM Education
  3. Learning STEM by Making - Ideation/Innovation
  4. Learning Communities - Supporting STEM Students from Diverse Backgrounds
  5. Broadening Participation -  Increasing the Pipeline through transformative teaching practices in Undergraduate STEM Education

Event Location & Schedule
The event takes place on the campus of Bowie State University in the Natural Science, Mathematics & Nursing Building, building #18 on the map. Click here for the campus map. 
Event Check-in, breakfast and networking take place from 8:30-9:00 AM. The meeting begins at 9:00 AM, and concludes at 4:00 PM. The conference agenda is available here

Participant parking is in Lot L (see map); permits are required and have been distributed to participants by email. If you did not receive a permit, please contact shute@aacu.org 

Event registration is online.  The general registration fee is $75 per person; $25 for graduate students; and includes lunch. All presenters are responsible for conference registration, travel and hotel expenses.  The conference is from 8:30 am - 3:30 pm on Friday March 15, 2019.  The registration deadline is March 6, 2019.
