2013 SoCAL PKAL Network Meeting

Interdisciplinarity and Assessment: Two Necessary Parts of STEM Education

February 2, 2013
University of Redlands
1200 East Colton Ave
Redlands, CA 92373

The day will be split between a morning session on Framing Leadership for Interdisciplinary Program Growth and an afternoon session on Exploring Assessment Tools.

We are very pleased to have Susan Elrod, former Executive Director of Project Kaleidoscope and currently Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics at California State University Fresno, lead the morning session on the Keck/PKAL Facilitating Interdisciplinary Learning project. During this session participants will learn more about the Keck/PKAL Facilitating Interdisciplinary Learning project and have the opportunity to apply the project's recommendations and leadership strategies to an ad hoc case study, as well as their own campus program planning and implementation. For a glimpse of what will be discussed, visit the project summary page and interactive website.

Assessment continues to be a topic of great interest in higher education. In the spirit of PKAL’s collaborative approach, we will feature a variety of assessments at “tables” for the afternoon session. Each table will discuss how the assessment tool works, and its strengths for particular courses. The table host will share his/her experience with the assessment tool and guide a discussion on the tool, covering the appropriate target group, advantages, and disadvantages of the assessment tool. We are seeking volunteers to host each table group. Hosts need not be an expert on the particular assessment, but must have some knowledge of the tool and be interested in discussing it. We envision a type of journal club atmosphere in which the participants will have read at least one article about the tool prior to the session.

For some possible assessment tools that could be used in the table discussions, click here. AAC&U has an assessment page which has more detail and references for some of the tools. The tools listed on these websites are possible topics for our "tables," but if you have an interest or experience with another tool, please consider volunteering to host a table about that tool by contacting Barbara Murray.

If you would like to host a table, please contact Barbara Murray (
