2018 Massachusetts PKAL Regional Network Summer Meeting

Salem State University
Ellison Campus Center, North Campus
Salem, MA 01970

Please join the Massachusetts PKAL Regional Network for a Summer Meeting focused on ‘Excellence in Teaching Introductory STEM courses.’ Faculty from all STEM disciplines are welcome to attend.

Faculty will choose from a variety of presentations and workshops that focus on best practices in teaching in introductory STEM classrooms and that emphasize culturally-responsive pedagogy. There will be also opportunities to network with colleagues in your discipline to share challenges and solutions for teaching introductory courses in your subject area.

Dr. David Hammer will bring the keynote address entitled, "Learning to notice, understand, and engage with students' thinking in introductory science." Dr. Hammer is a professor of Education and of Physics at Tufts University. For about 20 years, he has taught undergraduate physics and done related research on learning and instruction in science and engineering, including with respect to students’ epistemologies and instructors’ attending and responding to student thinking.

In addition, attendees will benefit from a lunchtime panel of alumni working in STEM fields. The panel will share their perspectives on how faculty could have prepared them for the STEM workforce during their introductory undergraduate years.

Event check-in, breakfast and coffee are from 8:00 - 9:00 am in the Ellison Center Campus Lobby, Lower Level (Building 10 on the campus map). The event runs from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, with the welcome and keynote at 9:00 am in Veterans Memorial Hall, Upper Level. Click here to view the program including abstracts.
