2024 Institute on Engaged and Integrative Learning

The Institute on Engaged and Integrative Learning (IEIL) provides institutions with time, resources, and support to develop and advance institutional-level efforts for integrative and engaged learning. Teams will explore ways to help students make connections among their experiences on campus and in the community, and to help students identify how resulting skills and knowledge from such experiences can set them up for success in their future lives and careers. High-impact experiential learning is central to the institute curriculum and can be integrated into all disciplines, across curricular and cocurricular experiences, and designed to be equitable, accessible, and impactful for all students. The institute curriculum and format provide teams with opportunities to reexamine and refresh current practices and learn about new strategies to develop an action plan for integrative and engaged learning tailored to the unique values, strengths, and areas for growth on their home campuses.

During the institute, teams will explore strategies and creative ways to build students’ capacities to integrate disciplinary and practical knowledge and skills across their education, transfer learning to new, complex experiences within and beyond campus, and embed learning into signature work and other culminating activities. Teams will have opportunities to create or reinvent initiatives to support equity, advance active student learning, and prepare students for full civic lives and careers in local and global contexts. IEIL sessions, led by national experts, emphasize the value of engaging across the curriculum—leveraging general education, the majors, interdisciplinary, integrative and experiential approaches, and cocurricular experiences—to enhance capacity to implement engaged and integrative learning and expand opportunities for hands-on learning experiences, community engagement, civic learning, and career readiness for all students.

Who Should Attend?

The IEIL is designed for teams of faculty (of all types), staff, and administrators at all phases of campus reform efforts. Because engaged and integrative learning cross multiple areas of campus work, teams can explore a range of campus reform efforts at the institute, such as general education reform, connection between general education and major curricula, alignment of curricular and cocurricular experiences, connecting engaged and integrative learning to career readiness, scaling campus civic and global learning efforts, strategies for advancing equity, and pathways for engaged learning.

The minimum team size is five people, including at least one senior academic officer. Campuses interested in applying are encouraged to consider a diverse range of possible team members who may represent important stakeholders in reform efforts, including faculty (from a range of disciplines), student affairs professionals, assessment directors, academic affairs staff (e.g., registrar), and community-engagement leaders.
