The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) invites session proposals for Lessons on Global Learning from Higher Education’s Response to a Global Crisis.
The deadline to submit proposals has been extended to May 15.

Developing and Submitting a Proposal
Proposals should be submitted through the online proposal form. The form asks for:
- Name, professional title, institution and email address of each facilitator
- Conference theme
- Session format
- Anticipated learning outcomes for participants (100-word limit)
- Background and evidence of the effectiveness of work being presented (250-word limit)
- Plan for participant engagement (250-word limit, not required for poster or pecha kucha formats)
- Session title (100-character limit, including spaces)
- Brief description to be used in conference program if accepted (2–3 sentences for a total of 75–125 words. Descriptions should summarize the above fields and highlight what is distinctive and transferrable about the work you are presenting)

- Connecting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Global Learning
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a blueprint for responding to global issues facing our world, nations, states, regions, and local communities. They can be used to frame disciplinary and interdisciplinary investigations and, thereby, to create opportunities for students to draw on a diversity of approaches as they engage in real-world problem-solving. How are you using the SDGs to shape curricular and cocurricular experiences for your students? How do the SDGs inform the learning outcomes of your course or program and the activities you design to prepare students for responsible citizenship? What opportunities to synthesize learning across the educational experience have the SDGs provided for students in place-based or virtual learning environments? How is your institution using the SDGs to ensure that student learning is focused on addressing global challenges in meaningful ways?
- Ethical, Meaningful Civic Engagement
How is your institution fostering students’ civic mindedness and ethical reasoning across majors and through curricular or cocurricular experiences? How are you measuring civic participation in a global context? How have you engaged the federal government and the State Department to support global learning on campus and in the broader community?
- Engaging Industry and the Workforce
How do curricular and cocurricular learning experiences provide students with opportunities to apply their learning in ways that anticipate future professional practice? How are you engaging current practitioners in diverse fields to guide global learning initiatives? What types of activities are you designing to prepare students to engage in meaningful work throughout their professional, personal, and civic lives? How can experiential learning in digital spaces help prepare students for careers or future study in global contexts?
- Embedding Global Learning
How is global learning being embedded in the curriculum and cocurriculum? How is global learning being integrated into student learning outcomes or goals at the programmatic or institutional level? How is global learning being assessed in courses and activities? How are students gaining global learning experiences outside of area studies or education abroad? What strategies have been most effective in maintaining institutional commitments to global learning amidst the stresses of the current sociopolitical climate.
- Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
How is your institution ensuring that all students have opportunities to participate in global learning? How are educators and leaders in the fields of global learning and diversity, equity, and inclusion partnering to combat COVID-19-racism and discrimination? What programs, polices, or strategies have you implemented to increase participation in global learning? How has global learning been integrated into the institutional fabric to promote the inclusion of all students? How are you assessing global learning activities to ensure a quality experience for students? How are you using online collaborative international learning to provide global learning opportunities for more students?
- Global Learning Adaptations
How can we continue to provide meaningful global learning experiences even as we respond to disruptions like the COVID-19? How is your institution adapting and operationalizing planning to support engaged student learning and maintain commitments to global learning outcomes, activities, and partners? How are staff and administrators meeting the changing and intensifying needs of students and faculty at your institution—including addressing the decline in international students? How are you adapting learning experiences to meet physical distancing requirements? What proven practices in online global learning can be scaled up to provide quality experiences for students across disciplines? How are you transitioning from place-based collaborations to virtual platforms?
Skill-Building Workshops (60–75 minutes) offer an interactive environment where conference attendees can develop a skill or apply theory to practice. Facilitators will share their experience, relevant scholarship, and evidence related to the topic to help participants build their professional practice. Session proposals should model collaborative and hands-on activities.
Pecha Kucha (Chit Chat in Japanese) Sessions (7 minutes for presentation, plus discussion) combine visual presentation and presenter commentary to tell a story about a creative endeavor, research finding, model, or other activity related to global learning. The structure of the presentation is based on 20 slides, each set to run for 20 seconds. Pecha Kucha presentations will be scheduled in sets of three, by theme. A session moderator will facilitate Q&A.
Think Tank Sessions (60 minutes) allow presenters to explore an in-depth global learning issue, topic, or question and offer space for discussion and application by participants. Presenters will provide orientation to the session topic, an overview of relevant research, frameworks, and/or concepts. Participants will also have opportunities for small group discussion and application of the issue, question, and/or topic and then reconvene for a session-wide discussion.
Poster Presentations (60 minutes) foster discussion through visual displays of research, models, and other materials. This session provides an opportunity for presenters to talk with many attendees about how to apply findings to their own work. AAC&U provides a table and poster board.
Preconference Workshops (3 hours; 2–3 facilitators) are an opportunity to vigorously engage in a topic integral to the themes of the conference. The preconference workshop must be highly interactive and grounded in principles of engaged learning. For this reason, proposals should provide detailed information on the workshop structure and timing, a plan for participant engagement, anticipated learning outcomes for attendees, and tangible takeaways for participants. Preconference workshops are featured sessions at AAC&U conferences and selection is highly competitive. If selected as a pre-conference workshop, up to three presenters will receive complimentary registration for the conference. Presenters are responsible for travel and hotel expenses. All preconference workshops are scheduled for Thursday, October 8, 2020, 2:00-5:00 pm.
Proposal Review Criteria
AAC&U strives to offer balanced, informative, and thought-provoking conferences focused on practical and theoretical approaches to global learning at the course, departmental, and institutional levels from across a broad spectrum of higher education contexts.
The proposal selection committee will include experienced academic professionals with a range of backgrounds and areas of expertise. Considerations will be made to ensure sessions address the scope of topics within the conference themes. The following elements serve as proposal selection criteria:
- Relevance and significance to conference themes.
- Potential for practical, tangible, and transformative takeaways for conference participants.
- Plans for involving participants in reflection, discussion, exercises, and other activities that will help them understand and apply the material. Plans should be appropriate to session format.
- The extent to which proposals reflect diverse perspectives, innovations, disciplines, and strategies for change. Student voices and perspectives are encouraged.

Additional Information and Requirements
The deadline to submit proposals is Friday, May 15, 2020. Proposals may be submitted through the evening.

All session presenters are responsible for conference registration fees, travel, and hotel expenses. Presentations will take place from the evening of Thursday, October 8, to midday on Saturday, October 10. Presenters should plan to be available at the time their session is assigned in the conference program, which will be shared by August 5.
The primary session contact will receive an email message indicating the decision on the proposal by June 22.
