VALUE: Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education

Metarubrics

As part of the VALUE project, AAC&U staff, in conjunction with teams of VALUE contributors, are gathering, analyzing, and synthesizing rubrics (and similar materials) for each of the AAC&U Essential Learning Outcomes in order to create what we are calling "metarubrics."  Each metarubric will contain the criteria most often found in the many rubrics collected and will represent a carefully considered summary of criteria widely considered critical to judging the quality of student work in that outcome area.

We will develop rubrics for the following Essential Learning Outcomes. In several cases, outcomes that AAC&U has referred to in pairs (e.g., written and oral communication) have been separated with the intent of developing individual metarubrics developed for each.

Outcomes for the development of metarubrics:

  1. Inquiry and analysis
  2. Critical thinking
  3. Creative thinking
  4. Written communication
  5. Oral communication
  6. Quantitative literacy
  7. Information literacy
  8. Teamwork
  9. Problem solving
  10. Civic knowledge and engagement—local and global
  11. Intercultural knowledge and competence
  12. Ethical reasoning and action
  13. Foundations and skills for lifelong learning
  14. Integrative learning

The VALUE Initiative will pilot and validate the metarubrics through using them to assess the quality of different pieces of work in students' electronic portfolios from our VALUE Leadership Campuses.

For more information on the VALUE Initiative, please contact VALUE Research Associate Wende Morgaine at morgaine@aacu.org.
