VALUE: Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education

Case Studies

In 2011, the VALUE project staff surveyed a random sample of individuals who had downloaded the VALUE rubrics from the AAC&U website. Among those respondents who indicated both that they were using the rubrics either “a great deal” or a “fair amount” and that they had begun to harvest data from their use of the rubrics in order to improve student learning, twelve were invited to prepare brief case studies identifying which of the rubrics were being used, by whom, and in what areas of the curriculum and cocurriculum, as well as to describe how the resulting data were being used to improve student learning. Examples drawn from the resulting case studies are used to illustrate key points throughout Using the VALUE Rubrics for Improvement of Learning and Authentic Assessment, the 2013 publication by Terrel L. Rhodes and Ashley Finley. In the spirit of building a national learning community around direct assessment of student learning, the twelve case studies have been made available here in full.
