70 Campuses Selected to Attend AAC&U Summer Institutes on General Education Reform; Making Excellence Inclusive; and Engaged Learning in and across the disciplines
Participants Will Work to Reform and Assess General Education Programs, Help Campuses Make Excellence Inclusive and Increase Student Success, and Advance Integrated and Engaged Learning in Departments
Washington, DC – May 10, 2010 –The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) announced today the colleges, universities, and state systems sending teams to its three regularly scheduled 2010 summer institutes. Teams of five or more from each institution will attend one of three summer institutes: the Institute on General Education and Assessment at the University of Vermont (June 4-9, 2010); the Greater Expectations Institute: Leadership to Make Excellence Inclusive at Vanderbilt University (June 15-19, 2010); and the Engaging Departments Institute at the University of Pennsylvania (July 7-11, 2010).
“AAC&U’s 2010 summer institutes are designed to address in a variety of ways the central challenge facing higher education—ensuring that all students achieve the high quality liberal education they need and deserve,” said AAC&U president Carol Geary Schneider. “Each year, we are inspired by the exciting and innovative ways these institutions are tackling the challenge of improving liberal learning outcomes for all their students.”
For twenty years, AAC&U’s Institute on General Education and Assessment has provided hundreds of colleges and universities with the formative and collaborative space to advance general education reform and its assessment on their campus. Campus teams come to this institute to develop, refine, and advance intentional curricula, engaging pedagogies, effective assessment, and long-term sustainability of efforts. The Greater Expectations Institute will mark the tenth anniversary of AAC&U’s intensive five-day program specifically designed for campuses working to build their institutional capacity and collaborative leadership to increase the inclusion, engagement, and high achievement of all their students, especially those historically underserved.
AAC&U also offers the Engaging Departments Institute, now in its second year, for teams of campus faculty and department chairs. The purpose of this institute is to advance integrated and engaged learning in and across disciplines, and to assess broad student learning outcomes within individual department majors. This Institute is part of ongoing work in Liberal Education and America’s Promise (LEAP), and is supported by the Teagle Foundation.
All AAC&U institutes offer campus teams a time and place for sustained collaborative work on a project of importance to their campus along with a curriculum focused on important trends, research and best practices, and a resident faculty of educational experts.
