Association of American Colleges and Universities Announces Members of New Global Learning
Leadership Council
Council members will recommend ways to provide students with more global knowledge and skills and prepare them for socially responsible and informed citizenship and professional success in the twenty-first century
Washington, DC—November 15, 2010—Marking International Education Week, the Association of American Colleges and Universities announced today the members of a new Global Learning Leadership Council (GLLC) formed as part of its ongoing Shared Futures initiative. Members of the GLLC will meet for the first time this week and will work together with the thirty-two colleges and universities participating in the latest Shared Futures project, General Education for a Global Century, funded by the Henry Luce Foundation.
The GLLC includes national leaders and scholars whose work addresses such issues as global learning, global citizenship, scientific literacy in a global context, intercultural dialogue, religious pluralism, civic engagement, diversity, and social justice. Indira Nair, professor emerita of engineering and public policy and vice provost of education at Carnegie Mellon University, will chair the council.
“Since 2001 when we first launched the Shared Futures initiative, AAC&U has worked with hundreds of faculty and academic leaders to explore ways of using global learning goals to bring coherence to new designs for general education,” said AAC&U Director for Global Learning and Curricular Change Kevin Hovland. “We are very excited to have the opportunity with this new project and this new council to tap the collective wisdom and experience of a remarkable set of national leaders as we reexamine the global learning landscape through a variety of lenses. This Global Learning Leadership Council will provide important national leadership to move higher education’s commitment to, and practice of, global learning to a new level.”
GLLC current members include:
Myles Boylan, Program Director, Division of Graduate Education, National Science Foundation
Harvey Charles, Vice Provost for International Education and Director of the Center of International Education, Northern Arizona University
Susan Elrod, Executive Director, Project Kaleidoscope
Victor Kazanjian, Dean of Religious and Spiritual Life and Codirector, Peace and Justice Studies, Wellesley College
Paul McVeigh, Associate Vice President, Global Studies and Programs, Northern Virginia Community College
Cathy Middlecamp, Distinguished Faculty Associate, Chemistry and Integrated Liberal Studies Program, University of Wisconsin-Madison
Caryn McTighe Musil, Senior Vice President, Office of Diversity, Equity, and Global Initiatives, Association of American Colleges and Universities
Indira Nair, Professor Emerita, Engineering and Public Policy and Vice Provost of Education at Carnegie Mellon University, (chair)
Martha Nussbaum, Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics, appointed in the Philosophy Department, Law School, and Divinity School at the University of Chicago
Fernando M. Reimers, Ford Foundation Professor of International Education and Director of Global Education and of International Education Policy Program at Harvard University
Eve Stoddard, Dana Professor and Chair of Global Studies, St. Lawrence University
Meeting for the first time during International Education Week, the GLLC will, over the course of its initial two years of work, guide the work of the Shared Futures initiative, help develop a shared vocabulary to communicate clearly to students and the public the importance of global learning goals, and explore the complex interconnections among various important goals for undergraduate education. The GLLC plans to release a national call to action in spring 2011 and a set of recommendations for global learning outcomes, curricular designs, and assessment approaches in 2012.
The General Education for a Global Century project builds upon innovative campus efforts to reframe general education courses and programs, and create coherent curricular designs that address complex global issues across divisions and disciplines. The GLLC will work with teams of faculty and other educational leaders from the participating institutions to:
- articulate essential global learning outcomes for all students;
- refine and disseminate models of global general education curricula that can be adapted across all institutional types;
- provide faculty development opportunities to assist college faculty in designing and teaching interdisciplinary, integrative courses that focus on real-world global issues; and
- develop rubrics to assess global learning outcomes.
