Association of American Colleges and Universities Appoints Alma Clayton-Pedersen Senior Scholar
Clayton-Pedersen Leaves Post as Vice President and Launches Private Consulting Practice After Ten Years of Leadership at AAC&U
Washington, DC—June 15, 2010—The Association of American Colleges and Universities formally announced today the appointment of Alma Clayton-Pedersen as a senior scholar. She assumes this new position on July 1, 2010 when she retires as AAC&U’s Vice President for Education and Institutional Renewal, a position she has held since 2001.
In addition to serving as a senior scholar in AAC&U’s Office of Engagement, Inclusion, and Success, Clayton-Pedersen is going into private consulting practice advising non-profit organizations, including educational institutions, corporate and family foundations, and government. “I have been inspired by all the work I have done with AAC&U’s member institutions to improve educational outcomes and make educational excellence more inclusive,” said Clayton-Pedersen. “The next phase of my work will continue this focus on creating environments that strive for inclusive excellence. In my private consulting practice, I will be working with clients to develop strategic plans to make excellence inclusive – and to provide professional development for leaders at all organizational levels in support of inclusive excellence.”
In her ten years at AAC&U, first in AAC&U’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Global Initiatives and as special assistant to the president, then as vice president leading the Office of Education and Institutional Renewal, Clayton-Pedersen ran several major initiatives on diversity as a resource for learning in higher education, and on managing institutional change efforts to ensure excellence and success for all college students, regardless of their background or level of college readiness. In addition to leading campus-based projects, she also served as co-director of AAC&U’s Network for Academic Renewal, which sponsors a series of working conferences each year now serving some 2,000 campus practitioners and leaders every year.
“Alma Clayton-Pedersen’s leadership has been an invaluable resource to the AAC&U community,” said AAC&U President Carol Geary Schneider. “Alma helped launch AAC&U’s important work on Making Excellence Inclusive, and I am pleased that she will continue to work with our colleges and universities in this long-term effort to support high levels of access, completion, and educational achievement.”
Clayton-Pedersen’s new consulting activities will be conducted as part of her involvement with Emeritus Consulting Group, LLC, a firm founded by her daughter, Sonja Clayton-Pedersen. Together, Clayton-Pedersen and her daughter seek to establish long-term relationships with organizations that want to support educational success for all students at all levels of education, P-20.
