AAC&U Announces Appointment of Susan Albertine as New Vice President
Albertine to Lead Office of Engagement, Inclusion, and Success and Remain Director of AAC&U LEAP State Initiatives
Washington, DC—June 9, 2010—The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) announced today the appointment of Susan Albertine as Vice President, Office of Engagement, Inclusion, and Success, a position she will assume on July 1, 2010. Albertine will assume this position after serving for more than two years as Senior Director for LEAP State Initiatives in AAC&U’s Office of Quality, Curriculum, and Assessment. In her new role, Albertine will continue to serve as director of AAC&U’s LEAP State Initiatives and as director of AAC&U’s Give Students a Compass project. LEAP is an acronym for Liberal Education and America’s Promise.
In addition to her roles in current LEAP initiatives, Albertine will oversee an office dedicated to programs that strengthen AAC&U’s transformative work within undergraduate education. The office will emphasize engaged, high-impact teaching and learning for all students, focusing on the success of “new majority” students, a highly diverse and mobile population—along pathways from school to and through college. The office will continue to direct AAC&U’s Network for Academic Renewal and AAC&U’s ongoing efforts to “Make Excellence Inclusive” by ensuring that new majority students fully benefit from a horizon-expanding liberal education.
“Susan Albertine shares AAC&U’s strong conviction that education for success and liberal education are one and the same,” said AAC&U President Carol Geary Schneider. “She has done a remarkable job in building momentum and leadership for this vision with AAC&U’s LEAP partner states. I am delighted that she has agreed to tackle the even larger task of taking our work on student success and inclusive excellence to the next level. Making excellence inclusive will require far-reaching change on many levels. Susan is both prepared and committed to make this effort on behalf of the nation’s least well-served students”
In addition to her experience leading AAC&U projects and initiatives since 2008, Albertine has many years of experience leading undergraduate education, curriculum transformation, and pre-K-16 reform initiatives. She was dean of the School of Culture and Society and professor of English at The College of New Jersey from 2002 to 2008. Prior to that, Albertine served as vice provost for undergraduate studies at Temple University and as assistant to the provost at the University of Pennsylvania.
“As a former school teacher and faculty member devoted to literacy and literature in the United States, I am excited by the opportunity to draw on my experience and join creative new work as I help AAC&U to make systemic change,” said Albertine.
