99 Campuses Selected to Attend Institutes on General Education; Student Engagement, Inclusion, and Achievement; and Citizenship and Public Health

Participants Will Work to Strengthen General Education Programs, Become More Intentional About Student Learning and Engagement, and Develop Undergraduate Public Health Curricula

Washington, DC -- May 1, 2008 -- The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) announced today the colleges and universities sending teams to its 2008 summer institutes.  Teams were chosen competitively to attend one of three different summer institutes: the Institute on General Education in Minneapolis, Minnesota (May 30 – June 4, 2008); the Greater Expectations Institute on Campus Leadership for Student Engagement, Inclusion, and Achievement in Snowbird, Utah (June 18-22, 2008); and the Educated Citizen and Public Health Institute in Crystal City, Virginia (July 14-15, 2008).

“AAC&U’s 2008 summer institutes are designed to address a spectrum of important issues facing colleges and universities today.  These campus teams will work with administrative, faculty, and assessment consultants to advance their educational priorities as they seek to become more intentional, inclusive, and integrative in the way they organize student learning,” said AAC&U president Carol Geary Schneider.  “The new emphasis on learning outcomes can be a real opportunity for academic change on campus.”

The Institute on General Education will provide participants an opportunity to examine current trends in general education, discuss strategies for implementing curricular reforms, and refine campus-specific general education reform plans in the context of campus missions.  Teams come to AAC&U’s Greater Expectations Institute to advance a specific educational change project by aligning the project to their institution’s mission, clarifying outcomes, refining planning and processes, and building a culture of organizational learning.  Teams at the Public Health Institute build upon established core courses to create intentional, coherent, and creative undergraduate public health curricula.  The Public Health Institute was designed in partnership with the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR) and is funded by APTR through its cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

All AAC&U institutes offer campus teams a time and place for sustained collaborative work on a project of importance to their campus.  For more information on AAC&U meetings and institutes, visit www.aacu.org.
