New Faculty Fellow Terrence Scout Appointed for Fall Semester

Washington, DC—November 2, 2005--The Washington Internship Institute (WII) and the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) have announced the appointment of a faculty fellow for the fall 2005 semester. Professor Terrence Scout, a professor of business at Washington College, is serving in the Faculty Fellows Internship Program at the Manufacturing Institute.

Dr. Scout has been the chairman of the Department of Business Management at Washington College for the past twenty years and was responsible for starting the program. Dr. Scout’s interests and research address especially international business and the European Union. Each summer, he teaches a course called International Business Experience, in which he takes a group of ten to fifteen students to Leiden University in the Netherlands. He also serves on his local chamber of commerce and many local civic boards.

During this semester with the Faculty Fellow Internship Program, Dr. Scout hopes to gain knowledge and experiences that he can take back to the classroom, giving his students concrete examples from the business world of today. In addition, he looks forward to being able to build more experiential learning opportunities into his classes.

Dr. Scout received his Bachelor of Science in Education from Shippensburg University. He received his Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology from the University of California, Riverside. After completing his doctorate, he returned to school and received his Master of Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

The WII Faculty Fellows Internship Program is co-sponsored by AAC&U and enables faculty to broaden their professional, disciplinary, and personal horizons, reinvigorating their own work as scholars, teachers, and educational leaders. Fellows spend one full semester in a challenging professional environment in the Washington, DC, area. In collaboration with local leaders, faculty fellows investigate applied areas of knowledge, develop skills, and explore the systems and policies of their host organizations or agencies. Through these professional internship experiences, fellows gain new insights into how the aims of liberal education can be enhanced by high-quality experiential learning programs.

"The semester that a Faculty Fellow has in Washington is always quite busy and challenging,” says WII President Mary Ryan. “The program is designed so that each week a Fellow spends four days on the internship and one day attending a seminar, as well as additional enrichment activities. It is a wonderful experience for faculty and provides many opportunities for active and engaged learning."

For information about the program, see www.wiidc.org/faculty-about.shtml. For more information about AAC&U's projects and initiatives, see www.aacu.org.

WII is a recognized leader in the field of experiential education, creating Washington, DC-based learning opportunities for U.S. and international students. Its highly successful academic programs include the Embassy and Diplomatic Scholars Program, which arranges student internship in embassies and international organizations, and the Capital Experience, which places interns at sites such as the National Institutes of Health, the Smithsonian Institution, and legislative offices on Capitol Hill. WII is committed to individual development through excellence in experiential education.
