AAC&U Appoints New Senior Fellows Gregory Prince and Leon Selig

Prince and Selig to research the growth and development of
liberal education in a global context

Washington, DC—September 1, 2005—The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) announced today the appointment of two new senior fellows, Gregory S. Prince, Jr. and Leon M. Selig.

Greg Prince served as president of Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts from 1989 until his retirement this past June. Prior to assuming the presidency of Hampshire, Prince served as associate dean and chair of the Council for Interdisciplinary Programs at Dartmouth College. He also taught at The Chinese University in Kowloon, Hong Kong and co-directed the Williams in Hong Kong Summer Program. Prince has been active on many boards including, currently, those of the Nature Conservancy, Mass Ventures, and the Washington Campus in Washington, DC. Prince earned a BA, MPhil, and PhD, all in American Studies from Yale University. He also was a Coe Fellow at Stanford University and received a certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language from Georgetown University. As a senior fellow at AAC&U, Prince will be working on a book about the ways in which colleges and universities in a variety of countries and cultural contexts model the behaviors they seek to develop in their students especially in the areas of civic engagement, critical thinking, social justice, and citizen activism.

Leon Morange Selig has worked in a variety of fields: as a government servant, a businessman, teacher, and higher education administrator. Selig has been the associate director of a telecommunications research center at Polytechnic University in New York; director of executive education at INSEAD, the European Institute of Business Administration in Fontainebleau, France; visiting professor of marketing at L'Ecole Superièure de Commerce in Lyon, France; and associate dean and assistant professor at Pace University in New York. Selig has consulted widely both in the United States and in Europe. He currently serves on the boards of trustees of the American University in Bulgaria and the American University of Paris. Selig received his BA in art history from Wesleyan University, an MBA from INSEAD, and a certificate from L'Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris. Selig is currently studying higher education management at the University of Bath. As a senior fellow at AAC&U, he will research the European reception of the American model of liberal education with a focus on the developing democracy of Bulgaria.

Both Prince and Selig will be affiliated with AAC&U's Office of Education and Quality Initiatives. "We are very pleased to welcome both Greg Prince and Leon Selig to AAC&U," said Andrea Leskes, vice president for education and quality initiatives. "They are experienced educators and will contribute to our work on defining and promoting quality liberal education both in the US and internationally."
