Professors Martin Cadee and Cynthia Sutton Appointed Faculty Fellows for Fall Semester

Cadee Working at the National Council for Science and the Environment
and Sutton at the Center for Law and Education

Washington, DC—October 27, 2004—The Institute for Experiential Learning (IEL) and the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) have announced the appointment of two faculty fellows for the fall 2004 semester. Professors Martin Cadee and Cynthia Sutton are serving in the Faculty Fellows Internship Program sponsored by IEL in cooperation with AAC&U.

Professor Cadee is managing director of the faculty of philosophy at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. He is spending his fall semester interning at the National Council for Science and the Environment, where he will gain experience working in the field of sustainable development.

Cadee specializes in glaciology, climate change, quaternary geology, and geomorphology. He holds a degree in physical geography and has long been interested in environmental issues.

Cynthia Sutton, an associate professor at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, works in special education policy. Sutton is spending her semester as an intern under the direction of Paul Weckstein at the Center for Law and Education.

Professor Sutton earned her bachelor's degree in psychology, her master's in school psychology, and her doctorate in policy studies, all from Syracuse University. In addition to teaching at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, where she has been on faculty since 1991, Sutton has taught at Alfred University, Syracuse University, and Cazenovia College. She has also authored numerous articles and has served as a school psychologist.

The IEL Faculty Fellows Internship Program enables faculty to broaden their professional, disciplinary, and personal horizons, reinvigorating their own work as scholars, teachers, and educational leaders. Fellows spend one full semester in the Washington, DC area immersed in a challenging professional environment, such as a government agency, nonprofit organization, national association, museum, foundation, or similar site. In collaboration with local leaders, faculty fellows investigate applied areas of knowledge, develop skills, and explore the systems and policies of their host organizations or agencies. Through these professional internship experiences, fellows gain new insights about how the aims of liberal education can be enhanced by high-quality experiential learning programs.

For information about the program, see www.ielnet.org/faculty_fellows.html. For more information about AAC&U's projects and initiatives, see www.aacu.org.

IEL is a recognized leader in the field of experiential education, creating Washington, DC-based learning opportunities for U.S. and international students. Its highly successful academic programs include the Embassy and Diplomatic Scholars Program, which arranges student internship in embassies and international organizations, and the Capital Experience, which places interns at sites such as the National Institutes of Health, the Smithsonian Institution, and legislative offices on Capitol Hill. IEL is committed to individual development through excellence in experiential education.

AAC&U is the leading national association concerned with the quality, vitality, and public standing of undergraduate liberal education.
