AAC&U Names New Board of Directors
Washington, DC—June 9, 2000—A slate of seven new members were welcomed to the board of directors of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) at its spring board meeting in Washington, DC.
Board Chair Yolanda Moses will step down from the board July 31 to become the new president of the American Association of Higher Education (AAHE) and will be replaced by Nancy S. Dye, president of Oberlin College, who will become acting chair. Ronald Williams, president of Prince George's Community College, is the new treasurer. AAC&U's by-laws stipulate that board members either come from a member institution or a public institution.
New members of the board are: Estela Maria Bensimon, professor and associate dean at Rossieter School of Education, University of Southern California; Ronald A. Crutcher, provost, Miami University; R. Stanton Hales, president, The College of Wooster; Samuel Hines, Jr., dean of humanities and social sciences, College of Charleston; Freeman A. Hrabowski, president, University of Maryland Baltimore County; Theodora Kalikow, president, University of Maine at Farmington; and Cecilia Lopez, associate director of the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education, North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. They join remaining members: Peter Stanley, president, Pomona College; Carol G. Schneider, president, AAC&U; Troy Duster, professor of sociology and director, Institute for the Center of Social Change; Faith Gabelnick, president, Pacific University; Paul Gaston, provost, Kent State University; Gina Glantz, principle partner, Martin & Glantz; Michael Greenbaum, president and CEO, Hybrid Networks, Inc.; D.Bruce Johnstone, professor of higher and comparative education, SUNY at Buffalo; Grace Sawyer Jones, president, College of Eastern Utah; Richard McCormick, president, University of Washington-Seattle; Jeanne H. Neff, president, The Sage Colleges; John Noonan, president, Bloomfield College; and Elisabeth A. Zinser, chancellor, University of Kentucky, Lexington Campus.
"The vision and support provided by the AAC&U board has always helped to open new pathways to our work," said AAC&U President Carol Geary Schneider. "We welcome these new members for the insights and the leadership they will bring to help advance the aims and purposes of liberal education for all students."
In two days of meetings, the board addressed a variety of issues that expand and strengthen AAC&U's work. Among them: the focus of the 86th annual meeting, which will address issues of technology, market forces and the aims and purposes of liberal learning; positioning AAC&U in select arenas to elevate its public voice on behalf of liberal learning; and mobilizing campus and community leaders through AAC&U's Greater Expectations initiative to support academic change.
