Taking Responsibility for the
Quality of Every Student’s Liberal Education
Throughout its history, AAC&U has called upon the academy
to take responsibility for the quality of student learning
in college. AAC&U consistently stresses the importance
of clearly articulating the qualities of a well-educated person,
creating coherent educational programs that cultivate those
qualities, and assessing to determine if they have been achieved.
AAC&U works with campuses to develop effective ways to
improve the quality of student learning and, increasingly,
to assess the achievement of key general education outcomes.
AAC&U provides campuses with tools to assess learning
in ways that help improve educational programs and provide
useful information to key stakeholders.
AAC&U also is
publishing a series of papers and statements on accountability
and assessment. In 2005, the Liberal
Education and America's Promise campaign released the first in a series of reports titled Liberal Education
Outcomes: A Preliminary Report on Student Achievement in College.
