Education for a World Lived
in Common
AAC&U believes that civic engagement and a sense of social responsibility
are key outcomes of a twenty-first-century liberal education.
In 2003,
AAC&U launched the Center
for Liberal Education and Civic Engagement in partnership
with Campus Compact, the nationally known organization promoting
service learning. The center supports leadership, scholarship,
and campus-community partnerships that advance the multiple
and profound connections between civic engagement and liberal
learning.
AAC&U launched Shared
Futures: Global Learning and Social Responsibility in
2001 to expand knowledge about the world’s people and
problems and advance culturally informed approaches to democracy
and justice at home and abroad. The initiative’s projects
help colleges and universities prepare students for the global
workplace while also producing graduates who recognize their
shared obligation to humanity as a whole.
