Association for Women in Science (AWIS) Education Foundation Awards

The Association for Women in Science’s Education Foundation offers annual fellowship awards funded by member contributions. The foundation grants approximately twenty-five annual fellowships totaling between $15,000 and $20,000 to recipients in three categories: predoctoral students in the natural and social sciences, college sophomores or juniors studying physics or geosciences, and high school seniors planning to major in natural science. Graduate Women in Science (GWIS) Fellowships

Graduate Women in Science awards several annual fellowships to graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career junior faculty in the sciences. For the 2006-07 academic year, GWIS awarded twelve fellowships totaling $31,000. Membership in GWIS is not required for eligibility. Application deadlines fall on January 15 of each year, with awards for the academic year announced by July 1. For application guidelines, visit www.gwis.org/grants/default.

Association of American University Women (AAUW) Grants

The Association of American University Women offers a number of grants to women working in higher education settings, whether seeking to advance their careers through academic study or to improve gender equity through on-campus activism. Approaching deadlines include: Campus Action Project proposals (November 7, 2008); American Fellowships for doctoral candidates or postdoctoral scholars (November 15, 2008); International Fellowships for non-U.S. citizens (December 1, 20008); and Career Development Grants (December 15, 2008). Engaging Science, Advancing Learning (AAC&U)

The Association of American Colleges and Universities’ Network for Academic Renewal will host “Engaging Science, Advancing Learning: General Education, Majors, and the New Global Century” from November 6-8, 2008, in Providence, Rhode Island. Conference attendees will explore the question, “What are the most promising avenues for raising the quality and level of students’ engagement and achievement in science and scientific research?” To review conference information and register online, visit www.aacu.org/meetings/engaging_science.

American Educational Research Association (AERA) Women in Education

The Women in Education Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association will convene from November 6-8, 2008, in Arlington, Virginia. Entitled “Capital Women: Creating Solutions and Breaking Barriers—Then and Now,” the conference will feature Feminist Majority president Eleanor Smeal and performance artist Kate Campbell Stevenson. National Women’s Studies Association (NWSA) 2009 Conference

The National Women’s Studies Association annual conference, previously held in June, will move to November when the NWSA convenes in Atlanta, Georgia, from November 12-15, 2009. The conference is moving to the fall to better accommodate those hoping to maximize job search opportunities. Proposal deadline is February 1, 2009.
