Spelman LEADS Center

Spelman LEADS Center

Spelman College continues its tradition of preparing women for leadership through the Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement. Known as the “LEADS” center, its goals include Leadership Development, Economic Empowerment, Advocacy through the Arts, Dialogue Across Difference, and Service Learning and Civic Engagement. The LEADS center sponsors an annual Women of Color Leadership Conference, which was held in 2007 from May 8-10 in Atlanta. Southwest Institute for Research on Women (SIROW)

Southwest Institute for Research on Women (SIROW)

Housed in the Women’s Studies Department at the University of Arizona, SIROW aims “to develop, conduct and disseminate inter-disciplinary and inter-institutional collaborative research and education/outreach projects of importance to the diverse groups of women and girls in the southwestern U.S. and in northwestern Mexico.”  SIROW is an interdisciplinary organization with projects focusing on Border Health, Sexual Health, Substance Abuse, Oral History and Literacy, Leadership, Science, Location, Family, and Equity.  For more information, see sirow.web.arizona.edu/projects

Saint Mary's College Center for Women's Intercultural Leadership (CWIL)

The CWIL program at Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana, was established “to foster the intercultural knowledge and competence critical to educating the next generation of women leaders” through curricular change, community outreach, and faculty leadership. The website includes descriptions of the Center’s many projects and initiatives, with aims ranging from faculty diversification, student leadership training, community engagement, and research support. SisterMentors
SisterMentors

SisterMentors is a nonprofit organization composed of women of different cultural backgrounds, from various institutions, who provide mentorship and support to women in PhD programs. Spurred by the observation that “50% of all people who begin a doctorate drop out at the dissertation writing stage” and that this percentage is even higher for women of color, SisterMentors seeks to create a new paradigm in academia where “a community of scholars work[s] to help each other achieve academic success.” SisterMentors also provides support to middle and high school students in the Washington, DC area. Women Watch: Information and Resources on Gender Equity and Empowerment of Women

“Women Watch: Information and Resources on Gender Equity and Empowerment of Women” is a gateway to projects on gender equity sponsored by United Nations entities. The website is a collaborative project of the Inter-Agency Network on Women and Gender Equality and includes a directory of resources arranged by subject. Sponsored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UNESCO Bangkok Gender in Education website contains information about gender equality in education in Asia and the Pacific. Information is organized by theme and by country and includes links to print and online resources. The Web site includes information about the Gender in Education Network in Asia (GENIA), a network of ministers of education designed to facilitate resource sharing.
