This year's conference will examine the ways that gender relations affect the world of science, a topic recently highlighted by the controversy surrounding the comments of Lawrence Summers, President of Harvard University, who suggested genetic roots for the underrepresentation of women in scientific fields. Evelyn Fox Keller, Professor of History and Philosophy of Science in the Program for Science, Technology, and Society at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will be the keynote speaker.

The conference is scheduled for Saturday, October 22, 2005, from 8:00 AM-6:30PM, and will be held on the SUNY New Platz campus. For more information, please visit: www.newpaltz.edu/wmnstudies or call: 845.257.2977.

I'm Not Doing This Just for My Health: Programs that Work for Institutional Change

The Program for Health and Higher Education (PHHE), an HIV/AIDS institutional change project housed at the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), in collaboration with the Bringing Theory to Practice Project, is hosting a student pre-conference symposium, I'm Not Doing This Just for My Health: Programs that Work for Institutional Change. This symposium will focus on student engagement, HIV/AIDS, and mental health and is designed to empower and engage students to identify and promote various forms of activism on their respective campuses. It will also highlight the dialogues, strategies, and promising practices implemented by students within their campus community/ies. Though gender is not the explicit focus of the symposium, it plays an essential role in the topics being discussed and will be one of the lens through which participants are asked to examine both HIV and mental health and strategies for reaching out to key constituencies.

The Symposium is being held in connection with the AAC&U Civic Engagement Imperative conference and will take place Thursday, November 10, from 10:00 AM-5:00 PM in Providence, Rhode Island. Registration for the Symposium is limited to students (both undergraduate and graduate). The cost of registration is $25. For more information, please visit www.aacu.org/meetings/civic_engagement/studentsymposium.cfm or contact Amy Addams at addams@aacu.org.

Visions in Feminism Call for Presentations and Workshops

Visions in Feminism is issuing a call for workshops and presentations for its 6th annual conference, scheduled for Saturday, April 22, 2006 in Washington, DC. The conference is focused on mobilizing our communities and organizing them toward social change and social justice. ViF seeks to create feminism in its purest form, through organizing and mobilizing within our communities, continuing and expanding conversations of activism, confronting challenges as we encounter them, and sharing the successes we have experienced. This year, ViF is focusing on the techniques and processes that people use to create change in their communities and how these can be used in a feminist movement. ViF invites proposals on a broad range of topics that focus on mobilization and organization and welcomes all voices on these topics and encourages cross-cultural and transnational proposals from all areas/fields/focuses/disciplines. Workshops and presentations that are "non-traditional," and utilize various forms of media production are encouraged and will be given priority in the selection process.

Proposals should be submitted by mail or e-mail by December 15, 2005. Applications are available on the ViF website: www.visionsinfeminism.org. For more information, please contact ViF at: 703.276.9768, vif@visionsinfeminism.org.
