National Consoritum of Directors of LGBT Resources
National Consortium of LGBT Resources in Higher Education

The National Consortium of Directors of LGBT Resources in Higher Education (the Consortium) was officially created in November of 1997 at the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force's Creating Change Conference, though many of the individuals and centers had already been working together informally for a number of years. It seeks to create equitable campus environments through curricular and policy initiatives, climate improvements, the creation and funding of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) centers on all campuses, and support for all campus citizens. The Consortium provides several resources on its website, including but not limited to lists of campus-based LGBT scholars, programs, and centers, conferences, and resources developed by the Consortium and a bibliography of campus climate studies conducted by various colleges and universities (www.lgbtcampus.org/resources/campus_climate.html). To learn more about the Consortium, go to www.lgbtcampus.org/.

Journal of Gay and Lesbian Issues in Education
Journal of Gay and Lesbian Issues in Education

The Journal of Gay and Lesbian Issues in Education is a resource for educational practitioners, curriculum designers, policy-makers, and scholars. The journal sees its task as two-fold: "disseminate findings/ideas to an intellectually-minded community; draw implications for these findings/ideas to educational policy and practice," and publishes a mixture of research and scholarly papers and practitioner-oriented work organized around pedagogy, curriculum development, and policy. While the journal is most oriented toward primary, middle, and secondary schools, it does also publish articles on higher education, and some of the strategies and research may also be transferable to the postsecondary environment. To learn more about the journal, visit: www.jtsears.com/jglie.htm.

National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Foundation
National Gay and Lesbian Taskforce

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Foundation (the Task Force) was founded in 1973 as the first national gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender advocacy and civil rights organization. It employs primarily grassroots strategies to mobilize and organize trainings and broad-based political and legislative campaigns and build political power. The Task Force has identified colleges and universities as a vital site of equity, research, and mobilization work. The Task Force encourages the creation of campuses that promote equity and awareness and the establishment of campus LGBT centers and offices. It also developed a series of "Policy Recommendations for Safe Campuses," available on the Task Force website. To learn more about the Task Force generally, visit www.thetaskforce.org/index.cfm. To learn more about their campus-based recommendations and research, go to www.thetaskforce.org/theissues/issue.cfm?issueID=22.

Transgender Law and Policy Institute
Transgender Law and Policy Institute

The Transgender Law and Policy Institute (TLPI) is a non-profit committed to advocating for equality for transgender people through law and policy initiatives. They perform numerous roles in this struggle, including tracking, summarizing, and making public developments in legal and public policy affecting transgender people, providing free and public resources available for other advocates, and providing legal and medical resources to attorneys and others working to advance the rights of transgender individuals. The Institute has identified primary, secondary, and higher education as critical sites, and has compiled a comprehensive list of resources, including institutions that include gender identity/expression in their non-discrimination policies, institutions in jurisdictions that prohibit discrimination, and ways institutions can meet the needs to transgender students. To learn more about TLPI, go to www.transgenderlaw.org. To locate the list of resources for colleges and universities, visit www.transgenderlaw.org/college/index.htm.

OUTfront! Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Human Rights, Amnesty International
OUTFront!

Amnesty International USA and Amnesty activists from 40 other countries have joined to create a grassroots network, OUTfront!, devoted to promoting human rights for everyone, establishing anti-discrimination laws and policies that include sexual orientation and gender identity, and organizing against specific cases of abuse against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) individuals. Though this is not a higher education specific campaign, space exists for campuses and campus activists to become involved in this effort. Among the resources available on the OUTfront! Website are an activist toolkit and reports and success stories outlining strategies and approaches.

National Center for Transgender Equality
National Center for Transgender Equality

The National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE), founded in 2003 as a national advocacy, monitoring, and educational organization, promotes equality for transgender people. NCTE monitors federal activity, educates people about contacting and influencing congressional representatives, and serves as a coordinating body for a network of organizations and activists advocating for the civil rights of transgender people. It also serves as a resource center for research and information on issues pertinent to obtaining and protecting this equality. Though NCTE has not identified higher education as a specific site of concentration, many of the resources and strategies are directly applicable for individuals advocating for transgender rights on college campuses. To learn more about NCTE, go to nctequality.org/default.asp.
