Remarkable
Journeys: Poor, Single Mothers Accessing Higher Education
Nolita Clark and Shannon Stanfield with Vivyan Adair
Individuals and communities accrue enormous social, cultural, and
financial benefits when low-income, single mothers are supported in
post secondary educational endeavors. As two students currently enrolled
in a unique program at Hamilton College called The ACCESS Project,
we understand how higher education has changed our lives and those
of our peers.
Reclaiming the Promise of Higher Education: Poor Single Mothers in
Academe

Adair
I entered college in the summer of 1987, as a single mother and welfare
recipient without the skills, self-esteem, or vision necessary to
succeed in school. My passage was guided by patient and able teachers
whose classrooms became places where I built bridges between my own
knowledge of the world and crucial new knowledge, skills, and methodologies.
