Wye Seminars at the Aspen Institute

Presidents’ Seminar:  Global Values and Leadership
July 21-23, 2007

What do Americans need to know about global values and the Middle East and what do colleges and universities need to teach? Presidents and administrators are faced squarely with this challenge. The Aspen Institute and the Association of American Colleges and Universities have created this new weekend seminar to discuss these questions openly, forthrightly, and in a respectful and thoughtful manner to help college presidents gain a better understanding of global change and the implications for their institutions. In the wake of current tumultuous events, the seminar helps college presidents to navigate in an increasingly dynamic and complex political, social, and economic world.

The open discussion of ideas enables chief executive officers in education to reflect on values, choices, challenges, and visions; to re-examine their most basic assumptions, learn to articulate their own visions to their various constituencies, as well as to listen to and appreciate the values of others. This expertly moderated seminar promises to be enriching both personally and professionally. Through the seminar, participants will learn to transform themselves and their organizations, returning to their colleges and universities with renewed inspiration and commitment.

Classical readings on values and leadership from the Qur'an, Plato, Thucydides, Adams, and Jefferson are connected with contemporary readings including writings of Bernard Lewis, Samuel P. Huntington, Edward Said, Salman Rushdie, Lee Kuan Yew, Vaclav Havel, Bill Clinton, and Seamus Heaney.  The reading list for the 2007 Presidents' Seminar is available now.

This weekend seminar will overlap with the Wye Faculty Seminar Program which has been offering a seminar on "Citizenship and the American Polity" for two decades to hundreds of college and university faculty.  Faculty come from all over the country and around the world. Participants have consistently praised the week at Wye and the many benefits they bring back to their home campuses.

The Wye Faculty Presidents’ Seminar is co-sponsored by The Aspen Institute and AAC&U.
