2007 Institute on General Education
May 18-23, 2007
Newport, RI
Continuing its long tradition of providing top-quality programs for member and non-member campuses alike, AAC&U held its annual Institute on General Education from May 18-23, 2007 at Salve Regina University in Newport, RI.
The Institute created a varied, intellectually stimulating environment for advancing campus planning in general education. In addition to interactive presentations by leaders in general education reform, the program provided campus teams with ample opportunity to meet with experienced consultants and share ideas with other campuses.
The schedule featured a rich curriculum in general education reform including a track on planning and improving assessment of general education outcomes and programs. Campus teams also learned strategies for placing their general education reform within the context of AAC&U's Greater Expectations initiative.
2007 Institute Curriculum
While the curriculum is revised each year based upon the stated needs of the participating institutions, the 2007 Institute included three formal “tracks” in addition to a variety of concurrent sessions and workshops.
Track 1: The Process of General Education Change
Good ideas do not succeed on their own strengths alone. This track helped teams analyze campus dynamics, politics and culture, relations with other internal and external entitites, and change strategies for effecting general education reform.
Track 2: An Approach to Learning Improvement
Setting learning outcomes or expectations is a necessary, but not sufficient, step to learning improvement. This track focused on expectations for quality learning, standards for success, and student and faculty learning and development.
Track 3: Assessment and Communication
Campuses need useful assessments of student learning to serve multiple purposes. Techniques and strategies for assessing liberal lerarning from course to program to instiuttional levels were addressed in this track, along with stategies for communicating how results can be used in a variety of ways to deomstrate quality learning.
