2005 AAC&U Institute on General Education
Newport, RI
May 20-25, 2005
Continuing its long tradition of providing top-quality programs for member and non-member campuses alike, AAC&U held the 2005 Institute on General Education May 20-25, 2005 in Newport, Rhode Island, on the stunning campus of Salve Regina University. Thirty-one teams came from campuses all over the country as well as Europe to attend the Institute.
The Institute created a varied, intellectually stimulating environment for advancing campus planning in general education. In addition to interactive presentations by leaders in general education reform and informal time to share ideas with other campuses, the program provided campus teams with ample opportunity to meet with experienced consultants. The schedule featured a rich curriculum in general education reform including a track on planning and improving assessment of general education outcomes and programs.
For their stay in Newport, team members were provided private rooms (with private or semi-private baths) in modern dormitories. Meals were served in the new campus dining center. One afternoon and evening of the Institute was unscheduled, allowing teams the option of exploring the Newport area. The campus itself borders historic Newport mansions and a low-cost public shuttle provided convenient transportation to downtown Newport with its interesting shops and restaurants.
