2004 Institute on General Education
Colleges and universities participated in the Institute through a five-person team, reflective of campus diversity, which included a senior academic officer and faculty from a range of disciplines. Admission was competitive and limited to approximately thirty teams.
The central goals of the Institute on General Education were:
- to provide an understanding of contemporary general education in the context of the entire curriculum and of the Greater Expectations vision for student learning;
- to discuss strategies for successful implementation of curricular change;
- to facilitate the building of a campus learning culture based upon clear goals, intentional curricula, powerful instruction, and assessments that improve learning;
- to help teams refine and substantially advance campus projects on general education.
New in 2004: In response to campus demand, the Institute included a special track on assessment at both the student learning and programmatic levels.
Teams attending the Institute had extensive opportunities to work as a group, with other teams, and with the experienced faculty/consultants who were available throughout the Institute. The schedule of topical presentations, team time, and individual consultation with the resident faculty experts created a supportive, stimulating environment, allowing teams to make substantial progress in their general education reform efforts.
