Greater Expectations Institute
Campus Leadership for Student Engagement, Inclusion, and Achievement

An Activity of the Greater Expectations Initiative that Seeks to Improve Student Learning

Curriculum

The Institute emphasizes active participation in an environment that fosters open communication within and between teams, with the Institute faculty, and with national scholars and practitioners. The schedule features:

  • daily team time to work extensively on developing campus plans for sustaining institutional change;
  • seminars and interactions with other campus teams to discuss research, successful institutional change strategies, and effective practice that foster student engagement, inclusion, and high achievement;
  • cross-campus team time to develop relationships and examine similar campus challenges in different institutional contexts and from individual perspectives; and
  • specialized consultation with Institute faculty to address specific challenges campuses face in enacting learning-centered efforts.

The Institute will emphasize both educational and organizational concerns. Specifically, the program will focus on the topics below.

Creating a Culture of Engagement

  • Articulating student learning goals
  • Making inquiry-based learning and social responsibility campus-wide commitments
  • Encouraging students to invest themselves in learning
  • Developing a campus culture supportive of student learning
  • Creating institutional supports for greater student achievement
  • Engaging students in greater educational involvement and achievement
  • Connecting learning to significant issues in the larger society

Creating a Culture of Achievement

  • Using National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) data to advance and sustain innovation
  • Connecting learning goals, curricular design, pedagogy, and assessment
  • Raising expectations for the quality of student work
  • Linking liberal and professional education
  • Using technology as a catalyst for deepened student learning

Creating and Inclusive Culture

  • Creating sites of support for all students
  • Insuring that students can see their identities, histories, and hopes reflected in the curriculum
  • Investigating the research on student learning, diversity, identity, and intellectual development
  • Using the diversity of all as an educational resource for all
  • Fostering civic capacities for a diverse democracy

Leading the Engaged Academy

  • Connecting islands of innovation with larger institutional directions
  • Charting institutional innovation and change
  • Linking reward systems to desired outcomes
  • Fostering academic and student affairs collaboration to encourage greater student investment in their learning
  • Supporting faculty development for student learning
  • Creating departmental incentives for sustained change
  • Nurturing departmental, faculty, and student ownership of innovation

Joining the National Effort for Greater Student Achievement

  • Connecting campus efforts with the Greater Expectations and other national reform initiatives
