Fourth Biennial Meeting--October 24-27, 2002
Pre-Conference Workshops
How to Assess Campus Diversity Initiatives
This hands-on workshop is designed for people who want to
find out more about the impact of their diversity initiatives,
especially on student learning. As such, it will focus principally
on evaluations that illuminate learning environments of the
institution as a whole, the impact of the curriculum or student-life
centered programming, and the influence of pedagogies of engagement
within and beyond the campus. Participants will be taken through
the various steps in designing a good evaluation, be introduced
to frameworks for evaluations, and sketch out the beginnings
of a design for their own campus situation.

Waking People Up: Creating Social Consciousness through
Structured Interaction Initiatives
Structured interaction encourages different groups to come
together to explore intergroup issues as well as concepts
such as oppression, power, discrimination, identity development,
prejudice, and privilege. It is inclusive and sustained, takes
place in a "safe" environment, and is led by trained facilitators.
By adhering to a bi-directional process of understanding (groups
learning about each other), it uses intergroup conflict to
generate growth. This interactive workshop will introduce
techniques for creating social consciousness and models of
structured interaction including student intergroup dialogues
and retreats, staff story circles, and the arts.

Community-Based Service-Learning: Creating Courses that
Serve Faculty, Students and the Community
Community-service learning actively constructs knowledge,
enables learning to occur outside of the classroom, motivates
teachers, and helps develop civic action and social responsibility.
Participants will discuss components involved in creating
a service-learning program and will explore how service learning
aligns with effective pedagogical practice in higher education.
This interactive workshop will draw upon the experience of
an established service learning program, which infused cultural
competency development from the beginning and expanded to
a model of inclusion. Participants will explore ways that
service learning can be implemented into the curriculum at
their institutions.
