DEMONSTRATION OF WYE SEMINARS
Co-Sponsored by The Aspen Institute and AAC&U
Thursday, January 21, 2:30-4:00 p.m.
We are pleased to invite AAC&U-member provosts, presidents, academic vice presidents, and academic deans to participate in a demonstration of the Wye Seminars, which will be led by David Townsend of The Aspen Institute and St. John's College. The demonstration will provide an opportunity to preview the intellectual values and practices of the Wye Faculty Seminar and the Wye Deans' Seminar, held during the summer on the beautiful Wye Campus of the Aspen Institute.
Each year an interdisciplinary cross-section of thoughtful faculty members and academic officers enjoy stimulating discussions in formal seminars with time to read, reflect, exercise, and socialize at the bucolic Aspen Wye River campus on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Readings are selected to challenge participants to focus on values such as individual rights and responsibilities both nationally and globally, and the public purposes of education in a free, democratic republic.
The Wye Deans' Seminar
The Deans' Seminar – held June 13-17, 2010, for college and university chief academic officers, academic vice presidents, provosts, and academic deans – will focus on the challenges of academic leadership and liberal education in a diverse, global world. The Seminar will probe the values and goals fundamental to our institutions, using classical texts, both ancient and modern, eastern and western, illuminated by discussion with colleagues from other colleges and universities. The application deadline is February 1, 2010.
Wye Faculty Seminar
The Wye Faculty Seminar, to be held July 17-23, 2010, is one of the premier faculty development programs in the country. The Seminar seeks to address what we believe is a central need of faculty members – to exchange ideas with colleagues from other disciplines and other institutions committed to liberal education and probe ideas and values that are foundational to liberal learning in a free society. The Wye Faculty Seminar is offered to selected faculty members who have the honor of being nominated by their presidents and deans for their distinctive contributions to the quality of liberal education. The deadline for nominations is March 1, 2010.
