Annual Meeting 2005

Wednesday, January 26, 7:00-8:30 p.m.

Opening Night Forum

Degrees of Mediocrity, Degrees of Excellence
A conversation with John Merrow

What is the “value added” of going to college? Has higher education become “Hire Education,” as some claim? Who is being “priced out” as education costs continue to rise? Has sports taken over?

These are some of the questions that distinguished filmmaker John Merrow explores in his latest documentary, segments of which will be shown at the Annual Meeting. The film (scheduled to air on PBS in spring 2005) is an inside look at American higher education from admission to graduation at four different institutions: an elite private college; a large public university; a regional institution; and a community college.

Dr. Merrow will invite the audience to discuss disparities between the ideal and reality of education, public perceptions of higher education’s strengths and weaknesses, and the need for greater public scrutiny.

John Merrow is the host and executive producer of "The Merrow Report,” which airs on both PBS and NPR, and president of Learning Matters, Inc. He is also author of Choosing Excellence: "Good Enough" Schools are Not Good Enough. (2001)
