Conference Overview

Transforming STEM Education: Inquiry, Innovation, Inclusion, and Evidence will bring together forward-thinking STEM faculty and academic leaders from all sectors of higher education to share innovations, evidence, and practical strategies for succeeding in the dual STEM challenges of this era:

  • Reversing the dramatic U.S. loss of needed talent in STEM disciplines, using evidence-based practices that increase persistence and achievement for all students, with particular attention to students from underrepresented groups;
  • Ensuring that all STEM graduates build--from the outset of their studies--the multi-disciplinary knowledge, research skills, and mindsets needed to address the complex challenges to be faced in every sphere of society.

This conference is organized by Project Kaleidoscope (PKAL), AAC&U's center of STEM higher education reform. Consistent with recent recommendations from the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), this conference will place special emphasis on practices that engage students in integrative STEM learning, across the curriculum, with problem-based inquiry and cross-disciplinary analysis. The conference will give special attention to practices that demonstrably increase underrepresented student persistence and success in STEM disciplines. The conference is designed to support campus teams that include faculty from the full range of STEM disciplines, as well as administrators with broad responsibility for educational excellence and renewal.

Meeting tracks will address three primary themes:

  1. Advancing Integrative and Problem-Centered STEM Learning;
  2. Supporting Underrepresented Student Achievement and Reversing the Talent Loss in STEM Fields;
  3. Supporting and Scaling Faculty Leadership and Innovation.

Across all thematic tracks, sessions will feature ways that STEM teaching innovations can raise the level of student engagement in STEM fields and evidence about what actually works, both to advance integrative and interdisciplinary learning in STEM fields and to improve student success in STEM. Sessions will also explore ways to link STEM innovation to related institutional change priorities, such as general education renewal, underrepresented student success, assessment of student learning outcomes, and public and policy support for practices that strengthen STEM learning and achievement.
