North Dakota

In late 2010, North Dakota became the sixth LEAP state. In collaboration with AAC&U and as part of their participation in the LEAP initiative, leaders in North Dakota are organizing a series of campus action and advocacy efforts that champion the value of a liberal education for all college students.  Through a variety of activities that include participants from ND public, private, and tribal colleges and universities, the state leaders are advancing a strategic dialogue on the future of higher education and the importance of liberal education in North Dakota.

Statewide Activities

  • North Dakota’s seventh statewide General Education Summit was hosted by United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck on April 20, 2012, and was the first such summit to be held on a tribal college campus. The summit is a result of North Dakota’s successful efforts to create a general education community among all 19 of the state’s institutions of higher education: public, private, and tribal. Summit participants learned about AAC&U's LEAP initiative, WICHE's Interstate Passport project, and the impact of the Degree Qualifications Profile on general education statewide. The keynote was given by Tim Giago, a member of the Oglala Lakota tribe and founder of the Native American Journalists Association. Stakeholders at the meeting included faculty, administrators, employers, and policymakers.
  • Teaching is the specific focus of the Sixth ND General Education Summit, which will be held Friday, September 30 through Saturday, October 1, 2011, in Grand Forks, in conjunction with the Reflecting on Teaching Colloquium. Sessions include: “High Impact” learning in general education, scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL), assessment issues, and integrative teaching/programming. Ken O’Donnell, a nationally recognized leader in general education, is the keynote speaker and will facilitate a faculty development workshop. The inaugural meeting of the ND General Education Council will be held on Saturday afternoon from 12:30-2:00pm.
  • In Spring 2010, the third Statewide General Education Summit included review of a draft constitution that detailed membership, responsibilities, voting, and other details necessary to coordinate a statewide council consisting of public, private, and tribal college representation. The Summit concluded with pending adoption of the proposed constitution and unanimous support to seek formal participation in the AAC&U  LEAP initiative. In Fall, 2010, the fourth Statewide General Education Summit brought together representatives from 16 of North Dakota’s 18 institutions. The summit carried forward the work on essential learning outcomes begun in Spring 2010.  Participants approved a Council constitution and sent it to the campuses for ratification. The constitution has been sent to campuses for ratification this year.
  • Representatives from the North Dakota University System and North Dakota tribal colleges met for the first statewide General Education Summit in the spring of 2009. The goal of the initial statewide summit was to explore how to work together as a variety of institutions with different missions to prepare North Dakota students with the skills and knowledge they need to be successful professionals and engaged citizens in the twenty-first century.
