Team Attendance

Please review the attendance, arrival and departure information emailed to your team carefully. We are expecting these team members for the listed duration. If there are/have been any changes to the information below, please let Katie know immediately.

Housing Check-in & Institute Registration

Check-in

For participants arriving on Monday July 21:

Once on Portland State’s campus, please proceed to your team’s assigned residence hall. Call Katie Young or Michele Leaman on their cell phones. Identify yourself, your institution, and which residence hall you are at. She will send an AAC&U staff member to meet you, give you your keys and Institute materials, and provide you with a parking permit for the week, if necessary.

For participants arriving on Tuesday July 22:

There will be registration tables set up in both Ondine and Broadway residence halls from 12-5pm. Once on Portland State’s campus, please proceed to your team’s assigned residence hall. AAC&U staff will be in the lobby to give you your room assignment, keys, and Institute materials. Should you have any trouble getting to Portland State University or you know you will be considerably delayed in arriving, please call Katie Young on her cell phone.

For participants arriving after 5pm on Tuesday July 22nd:

All materials—including room keys—for participants arriving after 5pm on Tuesday will be given to the participant’s team leader. It is the participant’s responsibility to collect these materials from the team leader.

What you will receive at Housing Check-in and Institute Registration:
1 envelope labeled with your name, institution, and room assignment; containing: your nametag, 1 room key (2 if you are expecting a guest), 1 fob/card which will allow you to access the building (2 if you are expecting a guest), gym/fitness center access card, 1 Summer Institute participant binder—please read this through carefully!

Also available at Check-in and Registration will be:
Parking passes (please take one for each day required), Walking maps of Portland and the area surrounding the Portland State campus

Check Out

When you are ready to check-out, please tidy your room (make sure garbage is in the garbage can, all personal belongings are removed, etc) and lock your keys and fob in your room when you leave. Portland State University staff will collect the keys once you have gone. Should you have any questions about the check-out procedure, please call Katie or Michèle on their cell phones.

Meals

Because Portland State University is located in the heart of a thriving urban center, we have chosen to have lunch and dinner on Wednesday and Thursday be “on your own” so participants can take advantage of the diverse culinary options in Portland. AAC&U funded team members will be allowed up to $15 for lunch and up to $25 for dinner expenses. (Please see page 8 of the linked participant guide for more information on AAC&U expense reimbursements.) Note, however, that AAC&U does not operate on a per diem basis. Please save all your receipts! Receipts should be submitted with a reimbursement form to Michèle Leaman after the Institute. Daily breakfast as well as the opening and closing night dinner will be provided by AAC&U to all Institute participants.

Attire & Packing

Attire

Summer on a college campus is the perfect time to relax and let go of all the stresses of the academic year. In this spirit, attire at the Summer Institute will be casual. We will be having a Welcome Dinner and Performance on Tuesday night, as well as a Closing Dinner Cruise on the Portland Spirit. For these two events you may want to bring slightly nicer attire, but above all the theme for the week is comfort!

The weather for the week is forecasted to be mostly sunny with highs of 80-85 degrees Fahrenheit and lows of about 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

During the Institute we will be walking around the PSU campus. Please note that Portland State is a beautiful urban campus, and walks between the residence halls and the main Institute buildings will take about 10 minutes. Time is allotted into the schedule for moving from place to place, but be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes.

Packing

All participants have been assigned single rooms with private bathrooms. These rooms are fully furnished with free wireless access, fans, coffee pots, phones, alarm clocks and linens (bedding and towels). However, if you like to read or work in bed, you may want to consider bringing an extra pillow and a small reading lamp.

We have compiled a brief list of items to help you plan your packing for the Institute. This list is by no means complete, but we hope it will help get you started.

Phone (one will be provided in your room, but we recommend you bring along a cell phone and charger), clothes iron, clothes hangers, paper and pen, hair dryer, reading lamp, internet cable (see more about computing on campus in the technology section starting page 4 of the linked participant guide), toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothpaste, shaving supplies, etc.)

More Information

Additional information about the Summer Institute is included in the documents linked on the right side of this page. The “Program” document contains a full program for the Institute, while the “Participant Information” document contains maps and information about topics of relevance to your stay at Portland State University, as well as information about the surrounding area.

Michèle Leaman and Katie Young will be traveling to Portland on July 17th. Should you have any urgent questions after this date please email us, as this will be the best way for use to respond to your questions.

Please contact Katie Young (young@aacu.org) or Michèle Leaman (leaman@aacu.org) for more information regarding the Core Commitments Summer Institute.
