Gregory Prince

Gregory Prince served as president of Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts from 1989 until 2005. Prior to assuming the presidency of Hampshire, Prince served as associate dean and chair of the Council for Interdisciplinary Programs at Dartmouth College. He also taught at The Chinese University in Kowloon, Hong Kong and co-directed the Williams in Hong Kong Summer Program. Prince has been active on many boards including, currently, those of the Nature Conservancy, Mass Ventures, and the Washington Campus in Washington, DC. Prince earned a BA, MPhil, and PhD, all in American Studies from Yale University. He also was a Coe Fellow at Stanford University and received a certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language from Georgetown University. As a senior fellow at AAC&U, Prince will be working on a book about the ways in which colleges and universities in a variety of countries and cultural contexts model the behaviors they seek to develop in their students especially in the areas of civic engagement, critical thinking, social justice, and citizen activism.
