Bethany Zecher Sutton
Chief of Staff and Coordinating Director, LEAP, Office of the President, AAC&U
As Chief of Staff, Bethany Sutton manages the agenda of the Association’s president and helps guide the full range of AAC&U’s work to advance quality and inclusive excellence in undergraduate education. She serves as a strategic advisor to the president and senior staff on ongoing programs, internal operations, and grant-funded initiatives at AAC&U. LEAP (Liberal Education and America’s Promise) is AAC&U’s signature initiative to advance liberal education as the most powerful form of higher education for individual students and for a nation dependent on economic creativity and democratic vitality. LEAP involves hundreds of colleges, universities, and community colleges, and many partner state systems and consortia. Bethany serves as the Coordinating Director of LEAP, providing high-level leadership for the many projects and activities which comprise the initiative.
Prior to coming to AAC&U in 2001, Bethany worked in the Office of the Provost at the University of Pennsylvania, first as staff assistant to the Provost and then as executive assistant to the Associate Provost.
Bethany earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Mary Washington College (now the University of Mary Washington) and a master’s degree in history from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she served as a teaching assistant for introductory courses in American History.
