Bringing Theory to Practice
About the Campus Participation Program
The Bringing Theory to Practice Project is now in its fourth year of existence, involving over 300 institutions and funding over 60 campuses to participate in this national effort to advance engaged student learning and determine how it might improve the quality of students’ education, development, health, and commitment to civic engagement.
Participating institutions are the strength of BTtoP, promoting the Project’s mission and goals throughout their campuses, extending their efforts into their communities, to fellow colleagues, and the general environment of higher education.
The first major effort made by BTtoP to develop and evaluate new strategies and contribute to the evidentiary basis needed to establish linkages among engaged learning, student health, and civic engagement was the Demonstration Site program, involving seven institutions that served as “demonstrations” of the type of student engagement and learning environment on college and university campuses that BTtoP strives to support. Please see Demonstration Sites for more information.
**Reports of the Demonstration Sites Program are currently being authored by each campus. Findings and analysis of the data will be available in 2008.**
While the Demonstration Sites Program has produced substantial knowledge, it has been limited in its scope. In contrast, BTtoP extended the scope of the Project to a fourth-tier level of funding—the Intensive Site. The Intensive Site, part of the Demonstration Site program, will serve to improve upon the work already being done at the Demonstration Sites by addressing the issue of selection bias through reaching 100% of a target population.
Mini-grants, Student Programming grants, and Program/Research Start-up grants are also available through BTtoP(Mini grants, Program/Research Start-up grants, Student Programming grants) The Mini-grant and Student Programming grants are generally awarded to institutions initiating, or extending, conversations on their campus that lead to planning, implementation and assessment of program or research projects. Program/Research Start-up grants are awarded to those institutions planning to implement or extend program or research projects/initiatives on their campus.
