Bringing Theory to Practice Project

Leadership Coalition Faculty Conference
(This workshop was for Leadership Coalition Institutions; it was not open to the public)

January 20, 2010
Washington, DC

Background

The one day gathering in January brought together faculty and academic leadership representatives from each of the 53 Leadership Coalition institutions.  This was the first time that all of the institutions have had representation “in the same room”.  The focus of the January gathering was to have those gathered discuss and participate in the planning of how the BTtoP Project might be of help to each campus, and all of the campuses collectively, to launch programs, resources, and other opportunities that give attention to the faculty and their leadership in bringing about the changes that strengthen the cultures for learning on our campuses.

Objectives

The one day workshop had two distinct but complementary sets of objectives: (1) to present and discuss a limited number of issues that are most relevant to the concerns of faculty; to present an example of an illuminating and innovative action being taken that addresses one of the identified concerns; and to assure attendees that regardless of their location on any arc of change at their institution, they will “take away” some useful and transferable insights. (2) The second objective was to gain from the attendees their own perspective of what the key issues are;  how the Coalition could begin the work that would assist (reinforce, amplify, underscore, or facilitate)  them in addressing those issues on their campus; and how the Leadership Coalition could be most effective as a Coalition.

Attendees

All attendees coming to the Workshop came from Leadership Coalition campuses.  Each of two participants from a campus were involved in, or have participated in, specific action steps and plans taken on their own campuses.  Those in attendance included a faculty member whose voice and interest is in a specific aspect of the issues and concerns of faculty (this might be issues of rewards structures, or pedagogy and curricular concerns, or the implications of the teacher/scholar model being rethought). Other attendes were those particularly charged with invigorating and broadening the conversations taking place on campus regarding faculty leadership in making and sustaining change.
