Seminar Grant: Bridging Civic Development and Psychosocial Well-being of Asian American and Pacific Islander Student Leaders

"As an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI), the University of Maryland-College Park is committed to enhancing and developing new initiatives to address the needs of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students, which constitute 15% of the student body; thereby the largest racial minority on campus. This seminar is intended to be a half-day gathering of AAPI student leaders, advisors and staff supporting AAPI student leaders, key faculty and student affairs partners to 1) explore the mental health needs of AAPI student leaders; 2) discuss forms of support; and 3) craft an action plan to develop interventions regarding AAPI student mental health; and thereby increase students’ self-efficacy to engage in civic development and leadership opportunities. Ultimately the goal is to enhance students’ success to develop civic skills and practice social responsibility."

2010-2012

Program Research or Initiative Grant: Fostering Civic Development through a Student Union-based Learning Community

"T2T successfully launched and is engaging 22 students in a spring semester civic engagement course. These students are working with program faculty and staff to complete a 6-week practicum investigating social change efforts within Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties. To date, there is a solid foundation to show the impact of the spring course and the T2T learning community in general on students’ transition to UMD, civic development, and mental well-being. Specifically, this mid-year report describes progress related to grant objectives, additional accomplishments, challenges, as well as proposed amendments to the original grant. This project is on track to complete all objectives outlined in awarded proposal by July 2013."

2004-2007

Mini Grant: Conversation Group/Speaker Series Helping Students to Develop as Ethical Public Citizens

Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity led a student-driven initiative to enhance the interaction between students and faculty within the fraternity and sorority community which effectively reduced issues of substance abuse and depression through thoughtful, intentional conversations. These were facilitated through a speaker/presentation series geared toward the Fraternity/Sorority community, and open to the general public at the University of Maryland.
