AAC&U officers and staff regularly travel throughout the country, and occasionally the world, to speak and consult at AAC&U member schools through seminars, institutes, and workshops as well as in more informal gatherings. AAC&U staff also regularly speak on the value of liberal education at various media and public affairs events. These meetings are an opportunity for the membership to influence the direction of AAC&U's initiatives. We look forward to seeing you the next time we are on your campus.


Susan Elrod, executive director of Project Kaleidoscope, participated in the Climate Change Education Roundtable on May 11-12, 2010, in Washington, DC. On May 16-20, she attended the third Conceptual Assessment in Biology conference at Point Loma Nazarene University. On May 22-23, Elrod visited the University of Portland for the Willamette Valley Biology Education Network Meeting, in which she helped plan for a regional STEM education network.


Kevin Hovland, AAC&U director of global learning and curricular change, spoke to a group of Russian educators as part of a U.S. Department of State International Visitor Leadership Program. The panel was entitled Encouraging Global Education among the Nation’s Colleges and Universities and was held on May 21, 2010, in Washington, DC. Hovland was also a panelist at the Erasing Boundaries Workshop, part of the Environmental Design Research Association’s annual conference, on June 2, 2010, in Washington, DC.


Debra Humphreys, AAC&U vice president for communications and public affairs, presented on a panel, The Future of the Humanities in Higher Education: Beginning of the End?, at the Education Writers Association national meeting on May 15, 2010, in San Francisco. She also presented the keynote address at a faculty development conference, Institutionalizing Integrative Learning: Faculty Development, Course Development & Assessment, held at Roanoke College on June 16, 2010. She presented on the topic, “Preparing Students in a Globalized Knowledge Economy: The Imperative of Integrative Skills.”


Terrel Rhodes, AAC&U vice president for quality, curriculum, and assessment, was a keynote speaker at the IdeaPop! 2010 Conference on Integrative Learning, May 21, 2010, at the University of South Carolina. He discussed the quality of undergraduate education, access, general education, and assessment of student learning. Rhodes also visited Ohio Wesleyan University on June 1 and 2 to meet with general education and assessment committees and administrative campus leaders.


Caryn McTighe Musil, AAC&U senior vice president, was a panelist at the Distinguished Women and How They Lead conference June 11 in Troy, New York, hosted by the Institute for Community College Development. Her presentation was titled, “Changing Your Campus through Multicultural Alliances." Musil also attended the Ethics and Values in Higher Education in an Era of Globalization International Conference, hosted by the International Association of Universities in Vilnius, Lithuania, June 24-26. She participated in a roundtable discussion, “Towards an Interdisciplinary Global Code of Ethics for Higher Education?”


Frederick Winter, AAC&U senior director for advancement and leadership development, will join panelists from the Teagle Foundation and the John Templeton Foundation to discuss the structure of externally funded higher education projects at SCAFRO, the annual meeting of corporate and foundation relations officers from private liberal arts colleges, at Grinnell College July 6-8, 2010. At the same meeting, he will offer a session on federal funding for the humanities and AAC&U’s grant-seeking strategies.
